Alcohol addiction is a real thing. It is a disease that affects many people. If you or someone you love is addicted to alcohol, then you should look into rehab options. One such option is a 12 step alcohol program. You may decide to go to a group session, such as Alcoholics Anonymous or do this program on your own through family support and/or online.
Below is a list of the twelve steps Alcoholics Anonymous uses and some other information to help you in your quest for information. It is highly based in religion and finding yourself, if this is not for you there are several other options.
1. Admit to yourself that you have a problem.
Most people deny they have a problem. This makes it impossible to move forward.
2. You need to believe that God or some other being can make you whole again.
This is a spiritual step. You do not necessarily have to believe in God, you just have to believe in someone spiritual.
3. You must decide to turn your life over to God.
Again, this is a spiritual step. No one will know if you have done this step or not, other than you and your God. Keep in mind that if you are not fully responsible for your actions, the 12 step alcohol program will not work as well.
4. Search your heart and soul.
This means to understand why you feel you need alcohol.
5. Admit to yourself, to God, and one other person (at least) all the wrongs you have committed.
You can confess every past mistake or just the ones concerning alcohol.
6. Be ready to have God remove those character defects.
7. Ask God to remove your shortcomings and be a better person.
8. Make a list of every person you have hurt in any way, and be willing to make amends.
9. Tell those people you hurt that you are sorry and then make said amends if possible.
10. Continue to take inventory of yourself and admit when you are wrong.
11. Improve contact with God.
Through prayer and meditation, pray for His will to be done and the power to carry out His will.
12. Carry the message of the 12 step alcohol program to other alcoholics and practice what you learned in everything you do.
These steps are difficult and they are going to take time. You will not complete all 12 steps in one day or one week. However, the 12 step alcohol program can help you in your quest to stop drinking. This is a recurring process.
